Climber Stewardship Training in Yosemite Valley from Yosemite Climbing Stewards on Vimeo.
Video by Climber Steward Ben Ditto.
Take a peak behind the week at the first Climber Steward training in Yosemite.
For the first time, Yosemite Climbing Rangers, the Access Fund, Local Climbing Organizations, Land Managers, and Climber Stewards met up in Yosemite just before peak climbing season to discuss methods of taking the best possible care for climbing areas we love.
Climbing’s popularity has exploded over the last decade, and meet-ups like the Access Fund Stewardship Training week are critical for building a core of Climber Stewards in our growing community. The group spent time discussing various climbing impacts and brainstorming ways for sustainable long-term access. We also spent two days at the base of El Cap, building skills while improving a network of loose approach trails into a durable access to the east face – maybe for your attempt at the second ascent of the Dawn Wall.
Climbing is wonderful in that we can big-wall, boulder, crag, and scramble with a huge amount of freedom in some of the planet’s most spectacular places. As we share those places with more of our friends, kids, or strangers, it’s critical that we take the time to come together and continue building upon our history of land stewardship.

Hey guys!
I have volunteered in trail restoration in El Chalten (Patagonia) for two months. I’m living in Argentina but
planning on visiting Yosemite in late September. Any chance you’ll be taking volunteers? Abrazo!
Hi Adriana!
Safe travels! We are having a parkwide cleanup next week, and there will be some trail work days associated with the event. On the 24th, 25th and 26th, volunteers can sign up in front of the Visitor Center in the Valley for trail work at El Cap. Besides giving back, it’s a good opportunity to meet folks, put your name in a sweet gear raffle, and get to know the park. In the evening throughout the week are presentations and socializing, check this post for that schedule.
Thanks for getting in touch!
